Patient guide · periodontal & implant care · Barcelona

Prepare for treatment.
Plan your recovery.

A clear plan includes what happens before treatment and who supports you afterwards. Use this guide to prepare questions for your assessment, surgery and follow-up.

Your treating team’s instructions explain what is appropriate for your own procedure.

Appointments take place at collaborating dental clinics in Barcelona. The clinical location is confirmed when your visit is arranged.

Your care, in four stages

Know where you are.
Know what comes next.

The sequence and appointments depend on your assessment and treatment plan. You do not need to choose an operation before contacting us.

Before your assessment

Start with your concern.

Tell the team what concerns you and what you hope to improve. Mention existing photographs, X-rays, previous treatment plans and implant records. Start with what you already have; the team will explain which records or further investigations are appropriate.

A brief initial enquiry does not need your full medical history. Ask how to share any requested documentation.

Enquire about an assessment

Before surgery

Understand the plan.
Prepare the practical details.

Understand the procedure being proposed, its alternatives, material choices, risks, costs and likely treatment stages. Ask how temporary or final teeth and any donor site fit into the plan.

Five questions to clarify.

  • What preparation do I need for the agreed anaesthetic and procedure?
  • What eating and drinking instructions apply to me?
  • Will I need someone to accompany me or help afterwards?
  • What should I do if my health changes before the appointment?
  • Which visits are confirmed, and which later stages depend on healing?

Preparation depends on the procedure and the agreed anaesthetic plan.[1]

Before you leave

Keep your instructions.
Keep your contacts.

Make sure you understand your own written aftercare instructions. Ask for clarification if any part is unclear.

Ask for the contact and review arrangements in a form you can keep. General website enquiries are not a substitute for the urgent-care arrangements agreed with the treating team.[4]

During recovery

Early healing is one part
of your recovery.

Soreness, swelling or bruising can follow oral surgery. The expected pattern depends on the operation and your circumstances; a symptom becoming worse or causing concern needs advice rather than a general online timetable.[5][6][7]

Follow the treating surgeon’s instructions about cleaning, food and activity. Ask about smoking and its effect on healing. Clarify return to work or exercise in relation to your operation and the demands of the activity.

An early photograph does not set your recovery period. Reviews assess how the tissues are healing and whether the next treatment stage is appropriate.

Understand when to seek help

Gum grafts and donor sites

Ask how to protect both the treated area and any site used to obtain your graft. Cleaning and eating instructions depend on your surgery.

Understand gum grafting

Bone grafts and implants

An initially healed wound does not mean the graft or implant is ready for the next stage. Reassessment guides later surgery and restoration.

Understand bone reconstruction

Sinus procedures

Clarify the precautions for your operation, including activity, nose blowing and travel. Confirm return arrangements with your treating team.

When to seek help

Choose the right level of care.

These signs help you seek advice; they do not diagnose the cause of a problem. Do not wait for a website reply when you need urgent care.

A question about your instructions

Clarify with your team.

Use the contact route agreed with your treating team to clarify cleaning, prescribed medicines or your review.

OsteoPerio contact options

A concerning change

Seek prompt dental assessment.

Contact the treating team promptly about persistent bleeding, worsening pain or swelling, fever, discharge or a concern about the surgical wound.

Seek urgent local dental assessment if you cannot reach the team or need care while away.

[4][7][8]

Severe symptoms

Get emergency help now.

Difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing, or severe swelling in the mouth, needs immediate emergency care.

In Catalonia, call 112. Elsewhere, use the local emergency service.

[8][9]

Travel and continuing care

Plan the review
as carefully as the visit.

Agree the assessment, procedure, initial review and proposed stay before booking. Allow flexibility if your recovery or treatment plan changes. Confirm flight and return arrangements with the treating team, particularly when sinus surgery is involved.

Before returning home, clarify who provides follow-up, what records are needed and when further Barcelona visits may be necessary. Keep local dental support and the agreed contact plan available while travelling.

Your questions

Make space for
what you need to know.

Ask the team to clarify your preparation, instructions and continuing-care arrangements.

Do I need every record before contacting you?

No. Begin with your concern and mention what records are available. The team will explain the next step.

Should I stop a medicine before surgery?

Obtain individual instructions from your treating clinician. Do not change prescribed treatment on your own. This guide does not set medicine changes or doses.[2][3]

When can I return to work or fly?

Discuss this before arranging treatment. The operation, recovery and your practical circumstances determine the advice. A general online timetable is not clearance to travel.[1][5][6]

Is implant maintenance the same as care just after surgery?

No. Immediate postoperative care follows your surgical instructions. Ongoing maintenance is planned as healing and treatment progress.[4][7]

Can you confirm a reduced-fee supervised operation?

The supervised patient programme is still in preparation and is not available to book. This guide does not confirm eligibility or reserve treatment.

Can I have a consultation in French?

Consultations with both doctors take place in English or Spanish. Written French enquiries can use translation assistance; agree communication arrangements before your visit. This does not mean consultations are offered in French.
