Repositioning gum tissue, sometimes with a graft, may improve root coverage. The recession pattern, support between the teeth and tooth position influence what is achievable.

Grafting may be proposed to increase the volume of thin gum tissue. This is a different aim from complete root coverage, and the plan should explain the intended change.

Improve the band of firmer gum
Some grafts aim to increase the firmer tissue beside a tooth or implant. The priority may be comfortable cleaning rather than changing the visible gum margin.

An in-person examination checks tissue condition, recession and the surrounding support. The plan is confirmed before surgery, including the graft source, treating clinician, risks, fees and any other dental care needed.

Plan to stay in Barcelona through the initial healing phase and our team’s review, according to the surgery. After that assessment, follow-up can continue with your local dentist as agreed. Later visits may still be needed.

What to expect and discuss
Soreness, swelling or bleeding may occur at the treated area and any donor site. Healing can be incomplete and further care may be needed. Ask about the risks of the proposed procedure and follow your individual aftercare instructions.
After the first review
Our team checks the initial healing before the transition to local follow-up. Agree who will monitor the graft, how records will be shared and how to contact us. Urgent concerns need timely local assessment, rather than waiting for a remote reply.
Initial wound healing and later tissue maturation are different stages. Neither a travel schedule nor one early photograph can establish the long-term result.

Will a gum graft cover all of my exposed root?
Not always. Coverage depends on the recession pattern, tissue condition, support between the teeth and tooth position. The consultation should distinguish the achievable coverage from other aims, such as adding tissue thickness. The result shown in one case is not a guarantee for another.
Does gum recession always need surgery?
No. Assessment may lead to monitoring, changes in cleaning technique, sensitivity care or treatment of inflammation before surgery is considered. Orthodontic or restorative care may also be relevant. The recommendation should match the cause, symptoms and your priorities.
Will tissue be taken from my palate?
Your own tissue, often from the palate, may be recommended. Selected substitutes may suit some situations. Ask which material is proposed, why it fits the treatment goal, whether there is a donor site and what its care involves.
How long should I stay in Barcelona?
The stay depends on the grafting procedure, the area treated and your healing. Plan to remain through the initial healing phase and review with our team. The 20-day photograph on this page is a case record, not a recommended stay or a promise that healing is complete by that date.
Can I receive a plan before booking flights?
Yes. With full documentation, both doctors can explain a records-based diagnosis and proposed plan during a scheduled video consultation. Confirm the visit arrangements before booking travel. The in-person examination may identify findings that change the treatment or its timing.
What does the treatment estimate need to cover?
Clarify consultation, the proposed grafting procedure and materials, any donor-site care, reviews and any separate orthodontic or restorative work. Also allow for travel, accommodation and possible return visits. Fees depend on the assessed plan.
Can my dentist at home manage later reviews?
After our team has reviewed the initial healing, local follow-up can be arranged with your dentist. Agree their role, the information they need and the contact route for concerns before treatment. Some findings or later stages may require a return to Barcelona.
Can you review recession after previous gum surgery?
Yes. Share the earlier procedure details and available photographs or reports. Assessment considers why recession remains, the current tissue and support, and whether further surgery or another approach is appropriate.
